Work starts on major bridge in Tra Vinh

Work started in Tra Vinh on March 7 on a cable-stayed bridge that will connect the Mekong delta provinces of Tra Vinh and Ben Tre.

Once completed, the Co Chien bridge, which will be built in 36 months at an investment cost of almost VND3.8 trillion, is expected to cut the travel distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Tra Vinh to 70 kilometres and help to ease traffic jams in the locality.

Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony, permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said the Co Chien bridge, one of four bridges on Highway 60, was included in the coastal corridor development strategy.

The strategy aims to attract investment, promote cultural exchange, educational development and public health care as well as enhance regional defence and security, Hung said.

The Deputy PM said the construction of the bridge in the context of economic difficulties reflected the determination of the Government, the two provincial Party committees, transport and communication sectors in improving the local people’s life. – VOV
