Work begins on $52m biotech research centre

The authorities of southern Dong Nai Province on Tuesday kicked off the VND1 trillion (US$52.3 million) Biotech Application Centre project at a groundbreaking ceremony in the province’s Cam My District.

The centre, which will be built on 226ha of land, will conduct research and act as a bridge to organisations for training activities, technology transfer, projects in the field and production of biotech products.

Capital for the project comes from local and national budgets.

Dr Pham Van Sang, director of the province’s Steering Board for Biotech Development, said the centre would serve as the base for the development of a high-tech zone in the province in the near future.

According to Sang, during the 2010-15 period, the centre will focus on developing applied biotech agricultural models. It will also produce seedlings and young animals with high production capacity, and apply biotechnology to the preventive medicine, environmental protection and clean production sectors. — VNS
