Water shortage makes power problems more severe
Seven hydroelectric plants in Gia Lai province have ceased operation due to a lack of water, and the same could be in store for other hydroelectric plants.
Gia Lai Power Company said most of the halted hydro-power plants in the central highlands province are small. However, the same water shortages are plaguing many hydroelectric plants across the country.
According to the company’s Director Mang Doan, the firm is trying to ensure power supply for Gia Lai, despite of the decrease in output.
Ta Van Luan, Director of Yaly Hydropower Company said, as the dry season becomes more and more severe, it will trigger more power shortages.
He noted that less rainfall has considerably affected operations at hydroelectric plants. The current water levels are equal to just two thirds of the previous years’ figures.
The company’s power output during this dry season is forecast to decrease to only one billion kWh.
With the expected fall in hydroelectric output during the dry season, the country will face more serious power shortages this year.
It has been forecast that Vietnam will lack between 1.2 and 1.6 billion kWh during the dry season this year, due to higher demand coupled with a low hydroelectric power output.
