VNPT signs contract for launching VINASAT 2 satellite

Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) signed a contract for the launching the second telecommunication satellite of VINASAT 2 with the US firm Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems Corp yesterday May 11 in Hanoi.

It is the second bidding package for the procurement of the VINASAT 2 satellite and control facilities plus a launch service with the US partner with total value of about $300 million.

Under the contract, VINASAT 2 will be built and launched into the earth’s orbit in April 2012. The new satellite is expected to be put into operation in Q2 of 2012. Its designed lifespan is 15 years
According to VNPT’s representative, on the basic of the success of the two satellites of VINASAT 1 and VINASAT 2, the group will plan to launch the third satellite, depending on the market demands, telecommunication network, safety requirements and other conditions for registration profile for frequency and satellite location with the International Telecommunications Union.

The Wireless Frequency Agency, under Ministry of Information and Communications will be in charge of this task.
