VN exemplifies food security
Viet Nam was a good example of how food security had been secured in a developing country, delegates at a World Economic Forum agreed here yesterday.
The discussion, titled “Promoting public-private co-ordination in a new vision for agriculture”, was attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and agricultural ministers from many countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan told the delegates about Viet Nam’s infrastructure policies for economic and agricultural development.
The Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat, spoke about new challenges facing agriculture in Viet Nam and its initiative in private-public co-ordination to promote agricultural exports.
Phat said the State policies were the key to attracting investment and applying scientific and technical achievements to agricultural development. This experience was highlighted by Kofi Annan who suggested other developing countries learn from Viet Nam.
At an earlier discussion on Thursday, Nhaân said Viet Nam gave priority to information technology and provided many incentive policies, including investment infrastructure and human resources.
Nhan met with representatives from Russia, Britain and Switzerland. He told Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Ivanovich Shuvalov at a reception on Thursday that Russia should, together with Viet Nam, promote the implementation of all bilateral agreements signed as well as accelerate negotiations for early signing an agreement on providing credits for Viet Nam’s nuclear plant so as to ensure construction on schedule.
He also said that bilateral negotiations should be started soon for an early signing of a free trade agreement between the two countries aimed at achieving two-way trade of US$3 billion by 2012.
Nhan and his delegation will leave Davos tomorrow. — VNS
