VinaCapital invests in mobile service

VinaCapital-run Vietnam Infrastructure Limited, the first publicly traded fund to focus on infrastructure assets in Vietnam, announced that it had increased its stake in the Mobile Information Service Company.

The fund acquired a 30 per cent stake in the mobile service provider in March 2008. The transaction gives the fund an additional 45 per cent stake, or 75 per cent of the mobile company’s equity.

“This acquisition follows our strategy of acquiring a significant portfolio of BTS tower assets. MIS has grown its operations significantly over the past three years, and continues to have strong growth potential,” said Tony Hsun, managing director of VNI’s investment manager.

The number of mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam has increased rapidly, from 69 million in 2008 to more than 155 million in December 2010. The need for mobile network infrastructure is expected to increase further with the continued roll-out of 3G networks.
