Viettel’s 3G network scale largest in Southeast Asia

After one year of launching the 3G network, the Vietnamese military-telecommunication firm, Viettel, gained the biggest volume of 3G network stations in the Southeast Asia region.

Military Telecom Group (Viettel) said after one year of officially launching the third generation mobile network (3G), the group’s total number of 3G base transceiver station (BTS) has been doubled from 8,000 units to 17,000 ones, becoming the network operator with the biggest volume of 3G stations in Southeast Asia.

Thus, the Viettel’s total number of 3G BTS exceeded far from the pledged figure with the Ministry of Information and Communications in the examination dossier of 15,000 BTS after three years of launching the services. At the time of inaugurating in March 2010, the Viettel’s total number of 3G BTS also increased 1.5 times.

With the total number of 3G BTS equalling to 65 percent of 2G BTS (in big provinces and cities, this ratio is over 80 percent), Viettel realised its strategy of bringing wireless broadband Internet to people via Dcom 3G service.

According to statistics, the average using capacity of Dcom 3G is equivalent to 60 percent compared to ADSL subscribers. This suggested that, after one year of official launching the 3G network, customers began to form habits of wireless broadband Internet access.

This trend becomes clearer when during the first months of this year, the using capacity of Dcom 3G service has increased nearly 30 percent over the last month of 2010. The total volume of 3G Internet users is even higher than that of ADSL Internet.

The Viettel’s large and wide volume of BTS has created opportunities to access the information world for the people in rural areas, remote area where ADSL deployment still faces many difficulties.

Network statistics showed that the average capacity of one Dcom 3G subscriber in the rural area is even higher 10 percent than the subscriber in the urban zone. Hence, the demand of Internet using of people in the rural areas remains high.

With the advantages of high data download speed and quality, the 3G network has directly opened a new tendency for digital content service users. Viettel’s mobile subscribers using 3G service have higher using capacity by 45 percent than the subscribers of 2G network.

Of which, the ratio of using value added services and data capacity is higher 3.5 times than unregistered 3G subscribers.

Viettel is now the biggest provider for basic services and value added services with 18 services totally with some key services such as Mobile TV, Imuzik 3G, Pixshare, and Yahoo Chat. – Vneconomy
