Viettel to launch testing for 4G services

The Vietnam military-run telecommunications firm (Viettel) has recently announced to launch the testing for the fourth generation (4G) network for 240 customers in two big cities of Hanoi and HCM City.
The first testing for 4G technology is scheduled to be launched on May 12 in Hanoi by Viettel. Thus, after 7 months of getting the license for the test, Viettel is the Vietnam’s first mobile network enabling customers to try services of 4G technology. The broadband of 4G technology is 7 times higher than that of 3G technology.

Viettel’s director, Hoang Son, said the testing and trial use will help the network operator assess the actual capabilities. Basing on that basis, Viettel will decide to invest and prepare the infrastructure for the official service supply. However, the time for the official launching is undisclosed.

As planned, Viettel’s 240 mobile subscribers in Hanoi and HCM City will try the 4G technology from May 12 to August 31. Each customer will be provided a 4G USB device to use the 4G services in Hanoi’s two districts of Dong Da and Ba Dinh and two districts in HCM City including Tan Binh and Tan Phu.

In September 2010, the Ministry of Information and Communications has granted five licenses for the testing of 4G technology for businesses including Viettel, VNPT, CMC, FPT and VTC. These firms will have one or two years for the trial run of 4G technology to assess the technology and the needs of users in Vietnam. Meanwhile, in the world currently, there are about 17 network operators providing 4G services. – Vietbiz24
