Viettel launches mobile network in Mozambique

Movitel – a joint venture between Viettel Global Investment Joint Stock Company and Mozambique’s SPI – the holding company of the ruling Frelimo party, and Invespar, officially launched a mobile network of the first nine based transceiver stations (BTS) in Mozambique on October 7.

The first international call was connected successfully with the quality meeting technical specifications.

In November last year, Viettel won a license to become the third mobile service provider in Mozambique and committed to reach a mobile coverage of 80 percent of the population.

This was Viettel’s fourth license for investment abroad, after Cambodia, Laos and Haiti.

Movitel is expected to bring the total of 2G and 3G BTSs in Mozambique to nearly 1,000 by the end of this year. The company is now employing 570 staff, including 138 Vietnamese engineers and experts. – VOV
