Viettel launches maritime phone package

Military-run telecom firm Viettel officially launched on Monday a pre-paid mobile service package for people who live on islands and in coastal areas.

The package, named Sea+, is designed to match particular features and needs of coastal regions.

Package users will be offered flexible usage, attractive prices and many other services.

Viettel’s Sea+ package provides customers with accurate, quick and free information on the weather conditions including storm warnings and emergency telephone numbers to reach in case of danger.

Viettel has also built a hotline, 1111, that aims to directly answer clients’ questions on weather conditions in the sea and other issues. The switchboard users only have to pay VND1,000 per minute for the service.

In using the 1111 switchboard, customers will be able to register a maximum of 10 telephone numbers to receive emergency information from the hotline.

In times of emergency, package subscribers can send messages to 1111 and the switchboard will forward them to the registered telephone numbers. The rate for this service is only VND1,000 per minute.

Since fishermen often sail out to sea in groups of three or five boats and each voyage can last several months, Viettel has included group contact service in the Sea+ service package.

Subscribers can also register up to 10 contact numbers in this service for a monthly fee of VND10,000, and for half the amount if their contacts are also Viettel clients.

The Sea+ service package has no time limit for use. Domestic calls are charged at VND1,590 a minute while international calls cost VND1,790 a minute. The fee for short message service (SMS) is VND200 and VND250 per message for internal and external texting.

The coastal and island areas of Viet Nam are densely packed with a population of 29 million people. To ensure that the mobile package can reach these people, Viettel has established 1,400 transceiver stations along the coast and in offshore areas.

Viettel director Hoang Son said such strong infrastructure systems and new services would facilitate the daily life of coastal subscribers. — VNS
