Viettel expands operations in Haiti

Local telecom giant Viettel said its joint venture in Haiti is building infrastructure to launch a wireless service in the Caribbean country in 2011.

Natcom, the venture between Viettel and Haiti’s Teleco, will build 1,000 base transceiver stations for the service.

It has completed five stations which are able to make phone calls from Haiti to Vietnam, local news website VnExpress reported on Friday.

Viettel has helped Teleco rebuild its landline phone system after it was destroyed by the catastrophic earthquake in January 2010. Their joint venture is now providing internet services as well.

Haiti was the third foreign market that Viettel invested in, after Cambodia and Laos. The military-run company has been licensed to expand its business to Mozambique. – Thanhnien
