Vietnam’s Feb car sales slow from January

Car sales in Vietnam last month dropped to 7,889 units, down 21 percent from January, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said on Wednesday.

Sales fell in the 28-day month as the domestic market closed for about a week to mark the Lunar New Year, after 10,424 cars had been sold in January.

Compared with the same month in 2010, February’s sales surged 56 percent, accelerating from annual growth of 48 percent in January, the industry body said in its monthly report.

Toyota, the largest carmaker in Vietnam, sold 2,223 units last month, up 28.2 percent from the same month last year, the report said.

Separately, Vietnam has imported 10,617 cars in the first two months of this year, a surge of 80.2 percent from a year ago, government statistics show. – Reuters
