Vietnam’s economic statistical data in 10 months of 2008

The country’ social-economic situation has been adversely affected by the unstableness in the world economy, especially the financial crisis that brought about the decline of many economies.

Agriculture, forestry and fishery

Agriculture

The agricultural production in October mainly focused on winter-rice crop harvest in the North and cultivation of winter crops in the whole country. As of 15/10/2008, there were 597.9 thousand ha of winter rice reaped in the North, accounting for 50.3% of cultivated area and equaling 78.3% of same period last year. Estimated productivity was 4880 kg per ha, rose by 50 kg per ha against same period last year. To mid October, the country had 375 thousand hectares of winter-crops cultivated, rising by 10.5% over same period last year, of which cultivated area for maize was 185.9 thousand ha, rose by 4.4%; 39.9 thousand ha of sweet potato, rose by 1.5%; 62.2 thousand ha of soybean, rose by 14.5%; 79.3 thousand ha of vegetables, rose by 28.9%…

Forestry

Generally for 10 months, the area of concentrated forestation was estimated at 166.4 thousand ha, rising by 1.9% over same period last year; 172 million scattered plants, equaling 99.7%; the exploited wood production was 2760.9 thousand m3 rose by 4.5%. There were 2450.6 ha of forest destroyed, equaling 44% of same period last year, of which burnt area was 1047.2 ha, equaling 24.6%.

Fishery

Generally for 10 months of 2008, total production was estimated at 3806.8 thousand tons, rising by 9.6% against same period last year, of which farmed production was 2060 thousand tons, rising by 19.1%; catching: 1746.8 thousand tons, growing by 0.2%.

Industrial output

Industrial outputs value at 1994 constant prices in 10 months were estimated increasing by 15.8% against same period last year, of which the state economic sector rose by 5.5% (central management  by 7.7%; local management fell by 1.7%); non-state sector grew by 21.1%; FDI sector by 17.8% (oil and gas decreased by 8.2%, others  rose by 20.6%).

Investment

Capital investments under the state budget in 10 months were VND 75.6 trillion, equaling 77.1% of the whole year estimates. Of which, central capital was VND 24.2 trillion, equaling 72.9%; local investments: VND 51.4 trillion, equaling 79.2%.

Total number of newly licensed projects from begining of the year to 22/10/2008 was 953 with total registered capital USD 58.3 billion, though the number of projects decreased by 16.7% but total registered capital grew by 497.7% against same period last year. If USD 1 billion of additional fund for 247 times of licensed projects in period years were taken into account, total registered capital in 10 months of 2008 was USD 59.3 billion, rose by 426.6% over same period last year. Total realized FDI capital in 10 months was estimated at USD 9.1 billion, rose by 38.3 over same period last year.

Industry and construction was the field having a lot of  FDI projects with 512 projects, USD 32.5 billion registered capital, accounting for 53.7% of total FDI projects and 55.7% of total registered capital. The services sector had 400 projects with USD 25.6 billion, accounted for 42% of projects and 43.9% of total registered capital; agriculture, forestry and fishery: 41 projects with USD 222.4 million, accounted for 4.3% of FDI projects and 0.4% of total registered capital.

Government revenues and expenditures

Total government revenues from 1/1/2008 to 15/10/2008 were estimated at 102.2% of the yearly estimate, of which domestic revenue was 96.5%; revenue from crude oil: 98.9%; trade balance revenue: 121.7%. Of domestic revenues, revenue from state enterprices was 95.2%; from FDI enterprices (excluding crude oil): 87.3%; non-state trade and services taxes: 89.2%; tax on high income persons: 118%; petroluem tax: 77.9%; other fees: 83.5%.

Total government spendings to 15/10/2008 were estimated at 87.8% of the yearly estimate, of which spending for investment and development was 75.7% (only for capital construction was 71.9%); for public services sector, Party, associations, defense and salary reform: 87.5%, for  debt and aid payments: 86.6%.

Trade, prices and services

Total retail sales of goods and services

Generally for 10 months, total retail sales of goods and services were VND 782.3 trillion, rose by 30.7% over same period last year. If the price rising factor was excluded, the rate rose by 6.1% over same period last year. The trade gained VND 644.7 trillion, accounting for 82.4% and rose by 31.2%; hotel and restaurant: VND 88.6 trillion, accounting for 11.3%, rose by 25.5%; services: VND 38.8 trillion, accounting for 5%, rose by 30.3%; tourist: VND 10.2 trillion, accounting for 1.3%, rose by 46.1%.

Consumer prices

In October, CPI decreased by 0.19% against last month. This is the first times that CPI fell since beginning of the year. CPI in October 2008 rose by 26.72% against same period last year; by 21.64% against December 2007. Average CPI in 10 months of 2008 rose by 23.15% over same period last year.

Gold and USD prices in domestic were much influenced  by the world market. The gold price in October rose by 3.21% over last month, by 12.53% over December 2007 and by 25.15% over same period last year. USD price decreased by 0.05% over last month, rose by 2.95% over December 2007 and by 2.46% over same period last year.

Exports – imports

Total export values in 10 months of 2008 were estimated at USD 53.8 billion , rising by 36.7% against same period last year, of which domestic sector gained USD 24.1 billion, rising by 41.7%; FDI sector (excluding crude oil): USD 20.2 billion, increasing by 28.6%; crude oil: USD 9.5 billion, rose by 43.2%.

Generally, commodity imports in 10 months were estimated at USD 70.1 billion, increasing by 42.6% against last year’s same period, of which the domestic sector gained over USD 45.8 billion, rising by 44.6%; the FDI sector:  USD 24.2 billion rose by 39%.

Trade deficits in 10 months were USD 16.3 billion, rose by 66.2% over same period last year and equaling 30.3% of total export turnovers.

Transport

As estimated, passengers carried in 10 months of 2008 were 1577.1 million and 67.5 billion passengers-kilometers, increasing by 7.8% in passengers and 7.5% in passengers-kilometers against same period last year. Of which, central transport carried 31.1 million passengers and 18.7 billion passengers-kilometers, increasing by 15.9% in passengers and 10.8% in passengers-kilometers; local transport: 154.6 million passengers and 48.7 billion passengers-kilometers, increasing by 7.6% in passengers and 6.3% in passengers-kilometers.

Land transport gained 1420.4 million passengers and 47.1 billion passengers-kilometers, increased by 8.5% in passengers and 7.9% in passengers-kilometers; River transport: 133.5 million passengers and 2.7 billion passengers-kilometers, rose by 1.2% and 3.1%; Rail transport: 9.5 million passengers and 3.7 billion passengers-kilometers, decreased by 2.6% in passengers and 4.9% in passengers-kilometers; and  air transport: 8.7 million passengers and 13.7 billion passengers-kilometers, rose by 13.5% in passengers and by 11.2% in passengers-kilometers against same period last year.

Volume of cargos carried in 10 months was estimated at 493.1 million tons and 144.2 billion tons-kilometers, increasing by 10.4% in tons and 41.2% in tons-kilometers against same period last year. Of which, transport by land gained 353.2 million tons and 18.6 billion tons-kilometers, rose by 11% in tons and 14.9% in ton-kilometers; by sea: 42.8 million tons and 117.1 billion tons-kilometers, rose by 30.2% and 50.3%; by river: 89.8 million tons and 4.6 billion tons-kilometers, rose by 2.1% and 1.2%; by rail: 7.2 million tons and 3.6 billion tons-kilometers, decreased by 2.2% in tons and rose by 11% in tons-kilometers.

Tourism

International arrivals to Vietnam in 10 months were estimated at 3.6 million, increasing by 3.5% against same period last year. Of which, visitors for tourist purpose were 2.2 million, rose by 2.7%; visitors for business purpose were 723.3 thousand, rose by 34.1%; passengers for visiting relatives were 443.4 thousand, fell by 12%. Visitors coming by air were 2.8 million, rose by 2.7%; by land: 678.8 thousand rose by 18.8%; by sea: 127.5 thousand fell by 32.4% against same period last year.

Communication

To end of October 2008, the country had 70.9 million telephone subscribers, of which VNPT had 39.3 million subscribers (10.2 million table telephone subscribers and 29.1 million hand phone subscribers). Total internet subscribers to end of October 2008 were 6.4 million, of which VNPT had 3.7 million subscribers. Internet users as end of October were 20.9 million. Total income of communication in 10 months was estimated at VND 54.9 trillion, rose by 24.4% against same period last year (Only the VNPT gained VND 39.6 trillion, rose by 15.9%), of which, income from telecommunication was VND 36.2 trillion, rose by 15.7%; income from postal service was VND 1.6 trillion, rose by 26%
