Vietnam’s economic situation in the two beginning months of 2010

The outputs of all sectors in the two beginning months of 2010 are as follows:

Agriculture, forestry and fishery

Agriculture

As of 15/02/2010, the country has cultivated 2,742.7 thousand ha of spring rice, equaling to 98.9% compared to same period last year, of which provinces in the North cultivated 884.9 thousand ha, equal to 94.8%, and provinces in the South 1,857.8 thousand ha, equal to100.9%.

Provinces in the Mekong River Delta finished sowing of rice seeds for 1,530,000 ha, equal to 101.4% of the same period last year. At the same time, provinces in the Delta also harvested 268,000 ha of early spring rice, equal to 93.5% of the same period in 2009. Estimated productivity rose from 50 to 100 kilograms of rice per hectare as compared to that in spring rice season last year.

To mid February 2010, the country’s cultivated area for other crops was 263,700 ha of maize, equaling 106.1%; 68,500 ha of sweet potato, equaling 105.1%; 85,000 ha of soybean, equaling 118.7%; and 310,200 ha of beans and vegetables, equaling 102.5% as against same period last year.

Forestry

Generally, in the two beginning months of the year, the concentrated forest area was estimated at 20,300 ha, increasing by 5.3%; dispersed planted trees were 38 million, rising by 0.4%; wood-cut production was 500,000 m3, up by 4.8%; firewood production was 4,700 steres, up by 1% as against same period last year.

According to local reports, there were 1,210.8 ha of forest burnt and damaged in the two beginning months of the year, 2.6 times higher than those in the same period last year, of which burnt area was 1,029.4 ha, 7.2 times higher; chopped and damaged area was 181.4 ha, decreased by 42%.

Fishery

The total estimated fishing production in the two beginning months was 699,500 tons, rising by 3.8% as against same period last year, of which there were 286,5tons of farmed products, rising by 3.6%; 413,000 tons of caught products, growing by 3.9%.

Industry

In the two beginning months, the industrial production value increased by 13.6%, which was much higher than the increased rate of 2.9% in the same period in 2009. Of which, the state sector rose by 8.1% (central industry rose by 11.2%; local industry decreased by 3%); the non-state industry rose by 15.1% and the FDI sector by 15.4% (petroleum and gas decreased by 11.4%, others rose by 19.5%) as against same period last year.

Investment

The realized investment capital from the state budget in the two months was VND 13.3 trillion, equaling 10.6% of the yearly estimate, of which, capital under central management was VND 4.2 trillion, equaling 11.2%, and capital under local management was VND 9.1 trillion, equaling 10.4% of the yearly estimate.

The attracted FDI in the two months was at an estimate of USD 1,781.3 million, equaling only 27.3% of that in the same period in 2009.  Of which, the registered capital of 88 newly licensed projects was USD 1,616.1 million (reduced  40.2% by capital and 42.5% by the number of FDI projects as compared with the same period last year); the additional registered capital of 16 times of projects licensed from previous years was  USD 165.2 million. Realised FDI in the two months was estimated at USD 1.1 billion, growing by 10% as against the same period last year.

Trade & services

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services

The total retailed sales of consumer goods and services in the two months at current prices were at an estimate of VND 246.3 trillion, rose by 27.4% as compared with the same period last year (the growth was 17.9% if the factor of high price was excluded). Of which, the individual economic sector gained VND 129 trillion, increasing by 24.9%; the private sector: VND 81.9 trillion, up by 37.6%; the state sector: VND 25.9 trillion, up by 12.8%; the FDI sector: VND 6.8 trillion, growing by 20.1%, and the collective sector: VND 2.8 trillion, up by 37.6%. Considering by business branch, the trade gained VND 194.5 trillion, rose by 28%; the hotel and restaurant: VND 27.1 trillion, going up by 23.4%; the service: VND 22.2 trillion, increasing by 26%, and  the tourist: 2.6 trillion, up by 35.1%.

Exports-Imports

The export turnover in the two months was at an estimate of USD 8.9 billion, growing by 0.1% as against the same period in 2009. (If the income from re-exportation of gold in the same period last year was excluded, the growth was 17.1%). Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 3.9 billion, falling by 21.1%; the FDI sector (including crude oil): USD 5 billion, rising by 26.2%. Many key exported items had higher turnover than that in 2009.

The import turnover in 2 the two months was at an estimate of USD 10.7 billion, showing a rise of 39.6% as compared to the same period in 2009, of which the domestic economic sector gained USD 6.4 billion USD, rising by 32.7%, and the FDI sector with USD 4.3 billion rose by 51.2%. There was a rise in almost imported items, chiefly imported goods for domestic production.

Trade deficit in 2 the two months was at an estimate of USD 1.75 billion, equal to 19.6% of the export turnover.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The consumer price index (CPI) in 02/2010 saw an increase of 1.96% as against the previous month. February’s CPI rose by 8.46% as compared to the same period last year, and by 3.35% as against 12/2009. Average CPI for the two months rose by 8.04% against that in the same period in 2009.

February’s gold price decreased by 2.03% as against the previous month, by 4.91% against 12/2009 and rose by 42.58% as compared to the same period in 2009. February’s USD price increased by 0.33%, 0.22% and 8.34% as against the previous month, last December and the same period in 2009 respectively.

Transport

The activity in the two months focused mainly on transporting goods for production and consumption, as well as meeting people’s requirement for traveling during the occasion of the Lunar New Year. Passenger carriage in the two months was at an estimate of 375.8 million participants, growing by 16.8% and 16.2 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 16.1% as against same period last year.  Of which, land transport gained 342.5 million participants, growing by 17.8% and 11.6 billion passengers-kilometers rose by 19.1%; river: 28.5 million participants, growing by 6.6% and 0.6 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 1.9%; aviation: 2.1 million participants, growing by 14.2% and 3.3 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 12.5%.

The volume of cargos carried in the two months was at an estimate of 109.1 million tons, rose by 8.3% and 31.6 billion tons-kilometers, up by 11.7% as against the same period last year. Of which land transport gained 81.3 million tons, increasing by 9,5% and 4.2 billion tons-kilometers, increasing by 10.4%; river: 19.3 million tons, up by 2.3%, and 3.1 billion tons-kilometers, up by 3.2%; sea: 7.3 million tons, up by 12% and 23.8 billion tons-kilometers, up by 13%.

Communication

There were 7.8 million new telephone subscribers in the two months, rose by 90.8% as against same period in 2009, of which 730,000 were desk telephone subscribers, rose by 15.9% and 7 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 104.6%. To end of February, the number of telephone subscribers over the country was at an estimate of 138.2 million, growing by 61.8% as compared with the same period last year, including 19.8 million desk telephone subscribers, up by 34.1% and 118.4 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 67.5%.

The number of broadband internet subscribers to the end of 02/2010 was estimated at 3.1 million, rose by 45% as against the same period last year. Total postal and communication service net income in the two months was estimated at VND 18.3 trillion rose by 59.4% as compared with the same period last year.

International visitors to Viet Nam

International visitors to Viet Nam in the two months increased rapidly, estimating at 877,700, increasing by 27.4% as compared to the same period last year.  Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 547,800, rose by 35.8%; for business purposes: 158,200, up by 47%; for visiting relatives: 128,500, slowed down by 0.6%. Visitors came by aviation were 696,600, up by 16.4%; by sea: 9,000, decreased by 13.4%, and by land: 172,100, up by 115.7%.
