Vietnam’s economic situation in January 2010

The outputs of all sectors in January 2010 are as follows:

Agriculture, forestry and fishery

Agriculture

As of 15/01/2010, the country has cultivated 1,881 thousand ha of spring rice, equaling 103.2% compared to same period last year.

Due to long lasting drought that resulted in shortage of water for irrigation, provinces in the North cultivated only 73,900 ha of spring rice, equaling 72.1% of same period last year. In the South, the sown area for spring rice was 1,807.1 thousand ha, equaling 105.1% of same period last year because of favourable weather. Estimated productivity of winter rice in harvested area increased from 50 to 100 kilograms per ha as against same period last year.

To mid January 2010, the country’s cultivated area for other crops was 206,200 ha of maize, equaling 100.4%; 69,400 ha of sweet potato, equaling 120.1%; 77,200 ha of soybean, equaling 128.2%; and 226,600 ha of beans and vegetables, equaling 107.6% as against same period last year.

Forestry

The wood-cut production in January 2010 was estimated at 280,000 m3, rose by 5.1%; firewood was 2,348,000 m3, rose by 1.2% as against same period in 2009. According to local reports,  there were 58.1 ha of forest fired and damaged in January 2009, of which there were 6.8 ha fired  and 51.3 ha of forest damaged. Only in Đắk Lắk, there were 50.9 ha of forest chopped and damaged.

Fishery

The total estimated fishing production in 01/2010 was 352,300 tons, rising by 5% as against same period last year, of which there were 267,400 tons of fish, growing by 4.9% and 29,500 tons of shrimp, up by 5.4%. Farmed products in  01/2010 were estimated at 150,500 tons, rising by 4.2% as against same period last year, of which there were 112,000 tons of fish, going up by 3.7%; 20,000 tons of shrimp, up by 5.3%.

Caught products in 01/2010 were estimated at 201,800 tons, rising by 5.6% as against same period last year, of which there were 155,400 tons of fish, up by 5.7% and 9,500 tons of shrimp rose by 5.6%.

Industry

The production value in 01/2010 at 1994 constant prices was estimated at VND 62.8 trillion, much higher than the increased rate of 28.4% in same period last year. The state industrial sector in January rose by 23.1% (central industry rose by 24.9% and local industry by16.2%); the non-state industry rose by 31.1% and the FDI sector by 29.1% (petroleum and gas decreased by 16.6%, others rose by 36.7%) as against same period last year.

Investment

Realized investment capital from the state budget in 01/2010 was VND 8,971.4 billion, equaling 7.2% of the yearly estimate. Of which, capital under central management was VND 2,143.2 billion, capital under local management was VND 6,828.2 billion, equaling 7.8% of the yearly estimate.

The attracted FDI in 01/2010 was USD 318 million, increased by 71.9% as against same period last year. Of which, the registered capital of 40 newly licensed projects was USD 285.1 million (rose 78.2% by capital and reduced 20% by the number of FDI projects); the additional registered capital of 3 times of projects licensed from previous years was  USD 32.9 million. Realised FDI in 01/2010 was estimated at USD 400 million, growing by 33.3% as against same period last year.

Government revenues and expenditures

As estimated, total Government revenues in 15 beginning days of January 2010 was equal to 4.3% of the yearly estimate, of which domestic revenues accounted for 4.6%; revenues from crude oil was 3.2%; revenues from import-export: 4.2%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from the state-owned enterprises equaled to 8.7%; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil): 2.6%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes: 2.7%; taxes imposed on high-income persons: 2.2%; petroleum fees: 2%; and other fees: 2.2%.

As estimated, total Government expenditures in 15 beginning days of January 2010 was equal to 3.7% of the yearly estimate, of which spending for investment and development accounted for 2.5%; for economic and social development, national defense and security: 4.2%; for paying debts and aids: 4.1%.

Trade & services

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services

The total retailed sales of consumer goods and services in 01/2010 at current prices were at an estimate of VND 121.2 trillion, rose by 23.1% compared to same period in 2009, of which, the individual economic sector gained VND 67.1 trillion, rose by 27.1%; the private sector: VND 38.3 trillion, up by 25%; the state sector: VND 11.1 trillion, reduced by 1%; the FDI sector: VND 3.5 trillion, grew by 24.3%; the collective sector: VND 1.2 trillion, up by19.2%. Considering by business branch, the trade gained VND 95.2 trillion, rose by 23.5%; the hotel and restaurant: VND 13.6 trillion, going up by 21.1%; the service: VND 11.3 trillion, increased by 23.2%; the tourist: VND 1.1 trillion, up by 7.8%.

Exports-Imports

The export turnovers in 01/2010 were at an estimate of USD 4.9 billion, showing a drop of 10.4% as against previous month, but rising by 28.1% as against same period in 2009.  Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 2.2 billion, increased by 22.8%; the FDI sector (including crude oil): USD 2.7 billion, grew by 32.9%. The export turnovers of almost items in 01/2010  increased compared to same period in 2009.

The import turnovers in 01/2010  were at an estimate of USD 6.2 billion, decreased by 16% as  compared to previous month and increased rapidly as compared to same period in 2009 with a growth of 86.6%, of which the domestic economic sector gained USD  3.8 billion, rising by 82.6% as against  01/2009; the FDI sector : USD 2.4 billion, rising by 93.4%.

Trade deficits in  01/2010 were estimated at USD 1.3 billion, decreased by 32.6% as compared to the previous month and equaled to 26.5% of the export turnovers.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The consumer price index (CPI) in 01/2010 saw an increase of 1.36% as against the previous month, of which the food and catering service had a highest growth of 2.11% (food grains rose by 4.41%; foodstuff by 1.65%); housing and construction material rose by1.66%; textile, hats and shoes by 1.24%; drinks and tobacco by 1.14%. Other goods and services had lower CPI growth: family appliances by 0.58%; transport by 0.53%; culture, entertainment and tourism by 0.33%; both education and medicines and health care by 0.27%. Only communication decreased by 0.11%. The CPI in 01/2010 increased by 7.62% as compared to same period last year. January’s gold prices reduced by 2.94% as compared to 12/2009; and increased by 53.89% as compared to January 2009. USD price in 01/2010 reduced by 0.11% as compared to 12/2009 and increased by 8.96% as compared to 01/2009.

Transport

Passenger carriage in 01/2010 was at an estimate of 184.5 million participants, growing by 6.6% and 7.8 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 8.2% as against same period last year. Of which, land transport gained 167.9 million participants, growing by 7% and 5.7 billion passengers-kilometers rose by 7.6%; by river: 14.2 million participants, rising by 2% and  0.3 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 4.3%; by aviation: 0.9 million participants, up by 8% and 1.4 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 10.6%.

The volume of cargos carried in 01/2010 was at an estimate of 54.6 million tons, rose by 5.1% and 15.5 billion tons-kilometers, up by 11.2% as against same period last year, of which land transport gained 40.2 million tons, up by 4.9% and 2.1 billion tons-kilometers, up by 4.6%; river: 9.6 million tons, up by 2.5% and 1.5 billion tons-kilometers, up by 3%; sea: 4 million tons, up by 8% and 11.5 billion tons-kilometers, up by 12% as against same period last year.

Communication

There were 4.9 million new telephone subscribers in 01/2010, rose by 145.3% as against same period in 2009, of which  560,000 were desk telephone subscribers, rose by 47.4% and 4.3 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 168.6%. To end of 01/2010 the number of telephone subscribers over the country was at an estimate of 135.3 million, rising by 62.3% as against same period last year, including 19.6 million  desk telephone subscribers, up by 35.3% and 115.7 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 68%.

The number of broadband internet subscribers to the end of January 2010 was estimated at 3.1 million, rose by 45.8% as against same period last year. Total postal and communication service net incomes in 01/2010 were estimated at VND 9.9 trillion, grew by 69.8% as compared to same period last year.

International visitors to Viet Nam

As estimated, international visitors to Viet Nam in 01/2010 were 416,200, increasing by 20.4% as compared to same period last year. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 261,100, rising by 27.4%; for business purposes: 76,900, up by 65.8%; for visiting relatives: 53,100, slowed down by 25.3%; for other purposes: 25,100, grew by 7.3%. Visitors came by aviation were 344,200, rising by 15.1%; by land: 67,000, up by 64%; and by sea: 5,000, reduced by 16.7% as against same period last year.
