Vietnam’s economic situation in 11 months of 2009

The outputs of all sectors in November and eleven months are as follows:

Agriculture, forestry and fishery

Agriculture

As of 15/11/2009, the country has harvested 1,473.3 thousand ha of winter rice, equaling 101.2% compared to same period last year, of which provinces in the North completed 1,152.5 thousand ha, accounting for 97% of the total cultivated area and equaling 100.6% of same period last year; provinces in the South:  320,800 ha, equaling 103.4%.

The total cultivated of summer rice in this year was estimated at 2,358.3 thousand ha, equaling 99.6% of same crop last year, with an estimated productivity of 4,730 kg/ha, reduced by 80 kg/ha and yield of 11.2 million tons, equaling 97.9%.

Together with the winter rice harvest, provinces in the North cultivated 79,700 ha of soybean, equaling 102.1%; 146,900 ha of maize, equaling 88.6%; 44,600 ha of sweet potato, equaling 80.3% and 109,000 ha of vegetables, equaling 108.6% of same period last year.

According to preliminary results from the animal husbandry survey on 01/10/2009, the country in this period of time had 2.9 million heads of buffalo, reduced by 0.4% compared to same period last year; 6.1 million heads of ox, down by 3.7%; 7.6 million pigs, rose by 3.5%; and 280.2 million fowls, up by 13.3%.

Forestry

Generally  in eleven months, the newly-planted concentrated forestation was at an estimate of 200,000 ha, increased by 5% compared to same period last year; wood-cut production was 3,320 thousand m3, rose by 6.3%; firewood was 25.8 million cubic meters, up by 4.6%.

There were 3,188 ha of forest fired and damaged, increased by 18.8% compared to same period in 2008, of which there were 1,625 ha fired, up by 43.9% and 1,563 ha of forest damaged, going up by 0.6%.

Fishery

The total estimated fishing production in 11 months was  4,418.5 thousand tons, rising by  3.5% against same period last year, of which there were 2,407.6 thousand tons of farmed products, growing by1.9%; 2,010.9 thousand tons of caught products rose by 5.5% (sea caught: 1,835.9 thousand tons, rising by 5,8%).

Industry

Generally, the production value in 11 months of 2009 rose by 7.3% compared to same period in 2008, of which the state sector rose by 3.6% (industry under central management went up by 5.4%, under local management went down by 2.8%); the non-state sector rose by 9.4%; the FDI sector by 7.7% (oil & gas rose by 9.6%, others by 7,5%).

Investment

Realized investment capital from the state budget in 11 months was VND128 trillion, equaling 88,9%  of the yearly estimate.  Of which, capital under central management was VND 53.6 trillion, equaling 94.6%; capital under local management was VND 74.3 trillion, equaling  85.1% of the yearly estimate.

The attracted FDI from 01/1 to 21/11/2009 has been  USD 19.7 billion, showing a drop of 72% compared to same period in 2008. Of which, the registered capital of 776 newly licensed projects was 14.6 billion USD (reduced  77.6% by capital and  47.5% by the number of licensed projects); the additional registered capital of 213 times of projects licensed from previous years was  USD 5.1 billion. Realised FDI in 11 months of 2009 was at an estimate of USD 9 billion, falling by10.4% compared to same period in 2008.

Government revenues and expenditures

As estimated, total Government revenues from beginning of the year to 15/11/2009 was equal 88.6% of the yearly estimate, of which domestic revenues accounted for 90%; revenues from crude oil equaled 77.6%; revenues from import-export: 92%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from the state-owned enterprises equaled 97.8%; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil): 77.3%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes: 85.5%; taxes imposed on high-income persons: 72.9%; petroleum fees: 145.2%; and other fees: 78,5%.

As estimated, total Government expenditures from beginning of the year to 15/11/2009 equaled 85.4% of the yearly estimate.  Of which, spending for investment and development accounted for 83.3% (only spending for capital construction was 82.1%); for economic and social development, national defense and security: 88,4%; for paying debts and aids: 94%.

Trade & services

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services

The total retailed sales of consumer goods and services in 11 months at current prices were at an estimate of VND 1,075.3 trillion, rose by18.5% compared to same period in 2008 (If the factor of price rising was excluded,  the growth was 10.8%), of which the trade business gained VND 843.1 trillion, accounting for 78.4% of the total and growing by18.5%; the hotel and restaurant: VND 121.4 trillion, accounting for 11.3% and rising by 18.6%; the service: VND 100.6 trillion, occupying by 9.4% and growing by 20.4%; the tourist: VND 10.2 trillion, 0.9% and 1% respectively against same period last year.

Exports-Imports

The export turnovers in 11 months of 2009 were at an estimate of USD 51.3 billion, showing a drop of 11.6% against same period in 2008. Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 24.3 billion, fell by 6.7%; the FDI sector (including crude oil): USD  27 billion, going down by 15.5%. If the exported value of crude oil was excluded, the export turnovers of this sector reduced by 3.7% only compared to same period in 2008.

The import turnovers in 11 months of 2009 were at an estimate of USD 61.7 down by 17.8% against same period in 2008. Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 39.3 billion, fell by 20.1%; the FDI sector: USD 22.4 billion fell by 13.2%.

The trade deficits in 11/2009 were at an estimate of USD 1.97 billion. The trade deficits in 11 months were USD 10.4 billion USD, equaling 20.3% of the total export turnover and 61.1% of same period last year.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The consumer price index (CPI) in November saw an increase of 0.55% against the previous month, of which the processed food and restaurant services recorded the biggest increase of 0.87% (food rose by 2.22% and foodstuff by 0.62%); the housing and construction material rose by 0.75%; others groups had lower growths than the general growth: drinks and tobacco by 0.44%; transport by 0.42%; textile, hats, footgear by 0.32%; housing appliances by 0.22%; medicines and medical services by 0.09%; education by 0.06%; culture, sport, entertainment by 0.03%; only the telecommunication and postal services reduced by 0.05%.

The CPI in 11/2009 rose by 5.07% against 12/2008; and by 4.35% against same period last year. The average CPI in 11 months of 2009 grew by 6.91% compared to that of same period in 2008.

November’s gold prices rose by 10.08% against the previous month; by 48.72% against 12/2008 and by 49.88% against same period last year. USD price index in 11/2009 rose by 1.45% against the previous month; by 7.28% against 12/2008 and by 8.5% against same period in 2008.

Transport

Passenger carriage in 11 months of 2009 was at an estimate of 1,809.8 million participants, growing by 8% and 78.8 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 5.8% against same period last year. Passenger carriage by land in 11 months achieved 1,635.8 million participants, rising by 8.4% and 56.9 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 9.2%; by river: 148.7 million participants, rising by 5.1% and 3 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 4.8%; by rail: 10 million participants, fell by 4.5% and 3.6 billion passengers-kilometers,  down by 12.8%; by air: 10 million participants, rose by 3.1% and 15 billion passengers-kilometers,  down by 2.2% against same period last year.

The volume of cargos carried in 11 months was at an estimate of 583.4 million tons, rose by 4.1% and 167.8 billion tons-kilometers, up by 8.6% against same period last year. Of which,  transport within the country gained 558.3 million tons, rose by 5.8% and 58.6 billion tons-kilometers, up by 5.2%; transport outside the country gained  25.1 million tons reduced by 5.5% and 109.3 billion tons-kilometers, up by 9.8%. In 11 months, land transport gained 427 million tons, rose by 5.3% and 21.4 billion tons-kilometers, up by 8,3%; the river: 107.8 million tons, grew by 2.1% and 17.2 billion tons-kilometers, up by 2.2%; the sea: 41.2 million tons, fell by 2% and 125,6 billion tons-kilometers, up by 10%; the rail: 7.4 million tons, fell by 5.2% and 3.4 billion tons-kilometers, down by 10.1%.

Communication

There were 41.8 million new telephone subscribers in 11 months of 2009, rose by 57.3% against same period in 2008, of which  4.2 million were desk telephone subscribers, rose by 79.1% and 37.6 million mobile phone subscribers, up by  54.3%. To end of 11/2009 the number of telephone subscribers over the country was at an estimate of 123.1 million, rising by 57% against same period last year, including 18.3 desk telephone subscribers, up by 32.8% and 104.8 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 61.8%.

The number of broadband internet subscribers to the end of 11/2009 was 2.9 million, rose by 44.2% against same period last year. Total postal and communication service net incomes in 11 months of 2009 were VND  81.2 trillion, rising by 32.3% over same period last year.

International visitors to Viet Nam

As estimated, international visitors to Viet Nam in 11 months of 2009 were 3.4 million, fell by 12.3% against same period last year. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 2,002.9 thousand, down by 16.2%; for business purposes: 698,200, down by 10.2%; for visiting relatives: 469,900, rose by 1.8%.
