Vietnam’s economic situation in 10 months of 2009
Agriculture, forestry and fishery
Agriculture
As of mid October, the country has harvested 2135.7 thousand ha of summer rice, accounting for  90.1% of total cultivated area, approximate to same period last year.
The cultivation progress of winter crops in this year is generally slower than in same period last year. To 15/10, maize cultivated area was 137,300 ha, falling by 4.3%; sweet potato area: 30,800 ha, reducing by 13.8%; soybean: 72,800 ha, rising by 5.9%; beans and vegetables: 69,500 ha, rising by 1.3% against same period in 2008.
Forestry
Generally  in ten months, the newly-planted concentrated forestation was at an estimate of 180,000 ha, growing by 4.7% against same period last year; there were 170 million dispersed plants, falling by 1.1%; 2955 thousand cubic meters of woodcut, rising by 6.1%. There were 3153 ha of forest fired and damaged , of which there were 1590 ha of forest fired and1563 ha of forest damaged.
Fishery
The total estimated fishing production in 10 months was  232,000 tons, rising by 2.7% against same period last year. Generally in ten months, the yield of fishery was at an estimate of 4020.6 thousand tons, growing by 3.7% against same period last year, of which there were 2177.6 thousand tons of farmed products, growing by 1.9%; 1843 thousand tons of caught products rose by 5.8% (sea caught: 1668.9 thousand tons, rising by 6.3%).
Industry
Generally, the production value in ten months of 2009 rose by 7% against same period in 2008, higher than the rate of 6.5% in September, of which the state sector rose by 3.6% (industry under central management went up by 5.7%; under local management went down by 4.1%); the non-state sector rose by 8.9%; the FDI sector by 7.4% (oil & gas rose by 10.7%, others by 6.9%). Of industrials products, some key items had higher growths than same period in 2008.
Investment
Realized investment capital from the state budget in 10 months was VND111.3 trillion, equaling 77.3%  of the yearly estimate.  Of which, capital under central management was VND 47.4 trillion, equaling 83.6%; capital under local management was VND 63.9 trillion, equaling 73.2% of the yearly estimate.
The attracted FDI from 01/1 to 19/10/2009  has been USD 18.9 billion, showing a drop of 72.9% compared to same period in 2008. Of which, the registered capital of 658 newly licensed projects was USD 14 billion (reduced by 78.3% by capital and by 53.3% the number of licensed projects); the additional registered capital of 179 times of projects licensed from previous years was USD 4.9 billion. Realised FDI in 10 months of 2009 was at an estimate of USD 8 billion, falling by12.1% against same period in 2008.
Government revenues and expenditures
As estimated, total Government revenues from beginning of the year to 15/10/2009 was equal 78.2% of the yearly estimate, of which, domestic revenues accounted for79.2%; revenues from crude oil equaled 70.2%; revenues from import-export: 80.5%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from the state-owned enterprises equaled 87.9%; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil): 67%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes: 75.1%; taxes imposed on high-income persons: 61.2%; petroleum fees: 132.6%; and other fees: 69%.
As estimated, total Government expenditures from beginning of the year to 15/10/2009 equaled 75.6% of the yearly estimate.  Of which, spending for investment and development accounted for 74% (only spending for capital construction was 73.1%); for economic and social development, national defense and security: 78.9%; for paying debts and aids: 79.2%. Government over expenditure in  9 months of  2009 was at an estimate of 4.1% of the gross domestic products (GDP).
Trade & services
Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services
The total retailed sales of consumer goods and services in 10 months at current prices were at an estimate of VND 958.3 trillion, rose by 18%  against same period last year. If the factor of price rising was excluded,  the growth was 10.1%. Considering the business and service sector, the trade gained VND 751.5 trillion, accounting for 78.4% of the total and growing by18%; the hotel and restaurant: VND 108.4 trillion, accounting for 11.3% and rising by 18.2%; the service: VND 89.4 trillion, occupying by 9.3% and growing by 19.6%; the tourist: VND 9.1 trillion, 1% and 0,7% respectively against same period last year.
Exports-Imports
The export turnovers in 10 months of 2009 were at an estimate of USD 46.3 billion, showing a drop of 13.8%  against same period in 2008. Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 22.1 billion, fell by 8.7%; the FDI sector (including crude oil): USD 24.2 billion, going down by 18%.
The import turnovers in 10 months of 2009 were at an estimate of USD 55.1 billion, down by 21.7%  against same period in 2008. Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 35.1 billion, fell by 24.5%; the FDI sector: USD 20 billion fell by 16.2%.
The trade deficits in 10 months were USD 8.8 billion, equaling 19% of the export turnover and 53% of same period last year.
Consumer prices
CPI in 10/2009  grew by  0.37%  compared to last month, lower than the growth of 0.62% in September. October’s consumer prices rose by 4.49% compared to 12/2008 and by 2.99% against same period last year. Average CPI in 10 months rose by 7.17% against that of same period in 2008.
October’s gold prices rose by 5.01% against previous month; by 35.1%  against 12/2008 and by 28.26% against same period last year. USD price index in 10/2009 fell by 0.35% against previous month; and rose by  5.74% against 12/2008 and by 9.2% against same period last year.
Transport
Passenger carriage in 10 months of 2009 was at an estimate of 1637.3 million participations, growing by 8.4% and 71.5 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 6.3% against same period last year. Passenger carriage by land in 10 months achieved 1478.5 millions  participations, rising by 8.7% and 51.4 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 9%; by river: 135.4 millions participations, rising by 4.5% and 2.7 billion passengers-kilometers, up by 3.4%; by rail: 9.6 million participations, growing by 6% and 3.4 billion passengers-kilometers, fell by 2.2%; by air: 9.1 million participations, up by 2.9% and 13.6 billion passengers-kilometers, down by 2.2% against same period last year.
The volume of cargos carried in 10 months was at an estimate of 528 million tons, rose by 4.4% and 148.8 billion tons-kilometers, up by 8% against same period last year. Of which,  transport within the country gained 505.6 million tons, growing by 5.6% and 52.6 billion tons-kilometers, up by 4.5%; transport outside the country gained  22.4 million tons, reduced by 7.5% and 96.2 billion tons-kilometers, up by 9.3%. In ten months, land transport gained 385.9 million tons, rose by 5.5% and 19.4 billion tons-kilometers, up by 8.6%; river: 98.6 million tons, rose by 2.3% and 15.7 billion tons-kilometers, up by 2.1%; sea: 36.7 million tons, reduced by 1.1% and 110.2 billion tons-kilometers, up by  9%; rail: 6.6 million tons, increased by 2% and 3.2 billion tons-kilometers, down by 2.6%.
Communication
There were 35.7 million new telephone subscribers in 10 months of 2009, rose by 63.8% against same period in 2008, of which 3.8 million were desk telephone subscribers, rose by 68.4% (since some new types of wireless services for desk telephone had been put into operation) and  31.9 million mobile phone subscribers, up by  63.2%. To end of 10/2009, the number of telephone subscribers over the country was at an estimate of 117.1 million, rising by 58.9% against same period last year, including 18 million desk telephone subscribers, up by 30.7% and 99.1 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 65.3%.
The number of broadband internet subscribers to end of 10/2009 was 2.8 million, rose by 44.6% against same period last year. Total postal and communication service net incomes in 10 months of 2009 were VND  68.7 trillion, rising by 25% over same period last year.
International visitors to Viet Nam
As estimated, international visitors to Viet Nam in 10 months of 2009 were 3012.2 thousand, reduced by 16.3% against same period last year. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 1771.3 thousand, down by 19.3%; for business purposes: 602,900, down by16.6%; for visiting relatives: 435,300, down by 1.8%. Visitors coming by airway were 2411.4 thousand, falling by13.6%; by sea: 57,4thousand, down by 54.9%and by land: 543,400, down by19.9%.
