Vietnam to Welcome 1.6 Billion Int’l Tourists by 2020: UNWTO
International tourist arrivals to Vietnam are expected to reach more than 1.56 billion by the year 2020, the UN World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) Tourism Vision for 2020 has forecast.
The local hospitality industry expects to have revenues of between US$10 billion and US$11 billion in 2015 and from US$18 billion to US$19 billion in 2020.
Last year, Vietnam welcomed 3.772 million international visitors and earned tourism revenues of VND70 trillion (US$3.8 billion), down 11% and up 9% on year, respectively.
The Tourism Vision for 2020 is the UNWTO’s long-term forecast and assesses developments in the global tourism industry over a 25-year period with 1995 as the base year and forecasts for 2000, 2010 and 2020.
By 2020, the top three regions for tourism will be Europe, which will account for 45.9% of the global tourism market. It will be followed by East Asia and the Pacific with 25.4% and the America with 18.1%.
In 2009, international tourism revenues accounted for 9.3% of total global GDP and the industry generated 210 million jobs or 7.4% of the world’s total working population.
The country’s tourism competitiveness is lower than other nations in the Asian region. In 2008, the World Economic Forum released its Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report (TTCR) showed Vietnam’s overall tourism competitiveness ranking dropped from the 87th to the 96th place. (VNA)
