Vietnam to Sue U.S. at WTO for Shrimp Antidumping Tariff
Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has proposed the government sue the U.S. at the World Trade Organization for its antidumping measures on Vietnamese shrimp.
Le Danh Vinh, deputy minister of Industry and Trade cum chairman of the national competition council said that the U.S.’s Department of Commerce (DOC) showed signs of violating the WTO’s regulations during a review of antidumping tariffs on shrimp imported from Vietnam.
Once the Vietnamese government approves, this will be the first time Vietnam has launched a dispute at the WTO three years after joining the global trade arbiter.
Le Van Quang, chairman of the shrimp committee under the VASEP said that Vietnam will sue the DOC for its method of calculating anti-dumping duties known as zeroing, and continuous depository and country-wide rate methods.
The U.S. has levied taxes of 0%-26% on Vietnamese shrimp.
The U.S. was the second biggest importer of Vietnamese shrimp with revenues of $395 million in 2009, down 15.4% from a year earlier and accounting for 23.6% of Vietnam’s shrimp export value. (Youth)
