Vietnam to host 44th ADB annual meeting next year

Vietnam will host the 44th Asian Development Bank (ADB) Annual Meeting in Hanoi on June 3-6 in 2011, Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Van Giau said at a press briefing here on Friday.

“It is a great honor for Vietnam to hold such an international event to boost its image, prestige and introduce our country, people and development potentials to the world,”Giau said.

The event is of great significance in the context that Vietnam needs a huge amount of capital for its infrastructure development, which helps the country maintain rapid and sustainable economic growth, Giau said.

From 3,000 to 5,000 delegates who are leaders of central banks, finance ministries from 67 members of the ADB, international agencies, multilateral financial institutions, non-governmental organisations, scholars and business people Giau said at the briefing.

The annual conference to be chaired by Governor of the SBV Nguyen Vau Giau next year is expected to discuss measures to prevent potential risks for socioeconomic development, enhance sustainable and environment-friendly economic growth and adapt to climate change, he said.

Vietnam has become the third biggest official development assistant recipient from the ADB in recent years behind Bangladesh and Pakistan.

By the end of November of 2009, ADB had financed 87 projects and programmes with the total capital of more than eight billion US dollars. Of which 38 projects valued at 3.15 billion US dollars had been implemented and 49 projects capitalised at 4.95 billion U. S. dollars are being carried.
