Vietnam to have two new intn’l airports

The Vietnamese government has green-lighted the construction of two new international airports, one in the northern province of Hai Phong and another in the southern province of Dong Nai.

The approval will allow investors to speed up the two projects, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Vietnam Newspaper reported.

According to a statement issued Thursday, the government has ordered the Ministry of Transport to study the potential impacts that the new airports will have on the economy.

They have also asked for an analysis of the projects’ potential effects on traffic to the nation’s existing international airports.

Vietnam initially planned to upgrade Hai Phong’s Cat Bi Airport to help meet the growing air travel demands to the North-Eastern region.

However, the government later decided to build a brand new airport in Tien Lang District after the upgrade of Cat Bi was deemed unviable.

Hai Phong is around 100 kilometers from Hanoi.

Vietnam’s Southern Airports Corp. is expected to begin construction on the $6.74 billion Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province in 2018.

The first phase of the project is slated to be completed by 2020.

By 2035, the airport will be able to serve 80-100 million passengers and handle 3 million tonnes of cargo every year. – Thanhnien
