Vietnam to double aquaculture output to 5M tons in 10 years

Cities and provinces in Vietnam will improve aquatic productivity and quality in order to double their aquaculture output to between four million and five million tons in the next ten years, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam.

The deputy minister was cited by local media as saying that the provinces will focus on raising productivity and quality to meet the target, while maintaining the aquaculture area at around 1.1 million hectares through the year.

Such as tra, shrimp, mollusk, tilapia, sea fish and seaweed which are most wanted by foreign importers will be targeted, Tam said.

The deputy minister, however, admitted that the increased aquaculture output will be still far from expectation of domestic processing plants.

Local firms will import aquatic products to cover domestic shortfall, he added.

Vietnam caught 3.347 million tons of aquatic products, including 1.76 million tons from ponds in the first eight months of this year, up 4.6% and 4.9% on-year, respectively.
