Vietnam sugarcane crop down 19,800 tonnes

Ending the sugarcane crop of 2009-2010, the sugar sector produced over 889,000 tonnes, down 19,800 tonnes year on year.

In addition to the sugar volume of 200,000 tonnes Ministry of Industry and Trade allowed companies to import, Vietnam will be 100,000 tonnes of sugar short, Doan Xuan Hoa, official from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.

Reportedly, the sugar sales between last September and May 2010 reached only 651,000 tonnes lower 200,000 tonnes compared with the same period of previous crop. Thus, till the middle of May, the sugar storage of companies gained 336,000 tonnes.

Sugar import till this time has just reached 36 percent of this year’s quota, equalling to 72,000 tonnes, according to General Secretary of Vietnam Sugar and Sugar Cane Association Ha Huu Phai.
