Vietnam stops making coins

Minting of currency coins has been stopped due to their poor quality, the State Bank of Vietnam said Monday.

The coins were reintroduced after a long gap in 2003 to enable their use in coin-operated machines, but they failed to achieve popularity and also began to discolor quickly.

The central bank will carry out research to improve their quality and report to the government, its governor, Nguyen Van Giau, said.
