Vietnam Seafood Processor Opens Pangasius Research Institute

Binh An Seafood Joint Stock Company (Bianfishco) will open a pangasius research institute in Can Tho province by end-July.

The institute will invite foreign experts to join with Vietnamese scientists in such activities as breeding process, and effective pangasius breeding method.

Ministry of Science and Technology decided to fund VND2.5 billion to the company to train researchers and managers for the institute, the newspaper added.

Bianfishco, starting operation from Jan 2007, has a processing plant covering over 30.000 square meters in Tra Noc II Industrial Park, Can Tho City. It has a designed process capacity of 500 tons of raw pangasius materials per day, creating jobs for 5,000 locals.

Last year the Can Tho-based company exported 19,300 tons of frozen pangasius for total US$53.3 million to 31 nations. Among these, US became the largest importer with expense of US$12.9 million, Spain US$7.3 million, Egypt US$4.06 million and Netherlands US$4.05 million
