Vietnam Seafood Exports to U.S. Expected to Rise
Vietnamese firms expect to export more seafood to the U.S. where aquatic products are scare due to BP’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that seriously polluted the environment, state media reported on May 21.
Demand for shrimp in the U.S. is increasing sharply as the oil spill made bad impacts on local fishing and aquatic farming, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) was quoted by the Voice of Vietnam Radio as saying.
Vietnam’s seafood exports to the U.S. grew 26.3% from a year earlier to US$215.75 million in the first four months of this year, though shrimp and tra fish, the two largest staples, are still subject to the antidumping tariff, the VASEP added.
Domestic firms are seeking to boost seafood exports to various markets for fear that the debt crisis spreading in EU, the largest market for Vietnamese seafood, will discourage the imports in the coming months.
In the first four months of this year, Vietnam exported 106,192 tons of seafood valued at US$317.4 million to EU, up 13% in volume and 17% in value compared to the same period of 2009.
The country exported US$227.129 million worth of seafood to Japan in the period, posting an on-year rise of 21.5%. (VoV)
