Vietnam provides nearly 70pct of Cambodia’s electricity import

Cambodia had to import 42 percent of the total electricity consumption in 2010, according to Cambodian Ministry of Industry, Mining and Energy. This amount of import increased about 40 percent from 2009′s.

According to the report, in 2010, Cambodia imported electricity from Laos, Thailand and Vietnam with a total capacity of up to 225 MW. Of which, Cambodia’s electricity import from Vietnam accounted for 67 percent and then Thailand 32 percent and Laos (1 percent).

Cambodia targets to meet 70 percent of electricity demand for households in the rural areas by 2030 and 100 percent of electricity demand in urban areas by 2020.

According to the statistics from the Cambodian government, this country’s electricity consumption demand increases by 19 percent per year, of which, its capital city, Phnom Penh, increases by 25 percent per year. However, Cambodia’s power sector can provide only 20 percent of the electricity consumption demand of the country.

During recent years, Cambodia has been encouraging strongly the foreign investments into the electricity sector. So far, Chinese enterprises are leading in investing in building the hydropower plants in Cambodia and then Korea, Russia and Vietnam.- Vietnam+
