Vietnam prepares for 4G frequency band

The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has gathered ideas from telecom providers for a fourth generation (4G) frequency band.

Responsibility for the task has been assigned to the Department of Wireless Frequency and Telecommunications, and will be completed by the end of this year. After this, telecom operators of Vietnam will be allowed to choose whether to adopt WiMAX or Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), 4G networks can provide connections at speeds of up to 100 Mbps downstream rates, dozens of times faster than the 3G network.

So far, five companies have tested WiMax – VNPT’s wholly-owned subsidiary Vietnam Data Communications Company (VDC), FPT Telecom, EVN Telecom, Viettel, and Sai Gon Postel. FPT (in Hanoi and Haii Phong).
