Vietnam power output +15% to 51.6B kWh in Jan-Jul

Vietnam produced 51.6 billion kWh of electricity in the first seven months of this year, up 15% from a year earlier, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The national power production output rose 6.6% on month to 7.97 billion kWh in July, according to the ministry.

Earlier, the Cong thuong online newspaper reported the country’s total power output rose 16.55% on year to 54.846 billon kWh in the Jan-Jul period while its power consumption was up 15.65% on year to 47.650 billion kWh during the period.

The state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN), the national sole power distributor, forecast the country’s power supply this month will continue to face difficulties due to unpredictable weather and repairs at some coal-fired power plants.

The national power output is estimated at over 300 million kWh per day in August amid total power generation capacity of between 15,500 MW and 15,800 MW, EVN said, adding that the national power system will not have standby capacity.

This year, Vietnam is forecast to face a power shortage of one billion kWh. (VEN)
