Vietnam March trade gap drops to $700 mln-report

Vietnam’s trade deficit will drop to $700 million this month, down some 36 percent from the estimated gap in February, a state-run newspaper reported on Thursday.

March exports were estimated at $3.2 billion and imports would reach $3.9 billion, the official Tuoi Tre daily cited Vietnamese customs data as showing.

The country’s trade deficit last month was estimated at $950 million, above the gap in January of $880 million based on customs data, the paper said.

It did not provide full details of Vietnam’s exports and imports for the first quarter. The government’s statistics office is expected to release the trade data later this month.

The government is aiming to keep the annual trade deficit in 2011 below 16 percent of the country’s exports. The official target approved by the National Assembly, or parliament, is to keep the deficit at less than 18 percent of exports. – Reuters
