Vietnam in Top Five Asian Importers of Soybean, Maize

Vietnam ranks the second among top five Asian countries importers of soybean and the fifth of maize importers from South America, the Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (AgroInfo) reported Friday last week.
In 2008-2009, Vietnam imported 2.3 million tons of soybean and 1.1 million tons of maize for animal feed production, the AgroInfor said, citing Reuters.
The country is forecasted to buy 2.5 million tons of soybean and 900,000 tons of maize in the 2009-2010 period.
In 2009, Vietnam produced 4.4 million tons of maize, down 141,300 tons with maize-growing acreage falling 11.4%, compared to that in 2008.
The Southeast Asian country imported US$1.765 billion worth of animal feed and animal feed materials from 25 main markets last year.
Vietnam needs between 17 million and 18 million tons of animal feed yearly but local factories can provide only 8.5 million tons, including nearly six million tons of cattle and poultry feed, and 2.4 million tons of aquatic feed. (agro.gov.vn)
