Vietnam now has around 1,500 businesses joining medicine production and distribution, including 553 ones in Hanoi, the Tien Phong newspaper reported Wednesday, citing the Vietnam Pharmaceutical Companies Association (VPCA).

The VPCA added there are nearly 42,000 drugstores nationwide, compared to 41,849 ones by end-2009.

Despite the rising number of drugstores over the past years, up to 592 Vietnamese clinics have not yet had any pharmacies by the end of 2009.

The prices of 17 imported medicines rose 6.1% on average and those of 23 domestically-made ones also rose 5% in June, the survey on 5,200 kinds of drugs in the Vietnamese market by the VPCA indicated.

The Ministry of Health’s inspectors made probe into 503 pharmaceutical trading facilities and fined more than VND198 million against 57 violators in the first half of this year.
