The Vietnam fishery industry said that it faced many difficulties in 2009 caused by material shortage, tariff and technical barriers.

Followings were 10 outstanding events of the industry in 2009.
1. Seafood export decreased for the first time over the past 13 years, down 6.6% from 2008 to US$4.2 billion.
2. Material shortage resulted in price skyrockets.
3. Russia resumed import of Vietnamese seafood, spending US$80.68 million on 46,344 tons in Jan-Nov period, including US$64 million on pangasius fish.
4. Pangasius fish’s prestige was sullied in several EU countries like Italy, Spain, Norway, in Middle East and New Zealand.
5. The U.S.’s Farm Bill 2008, taking effect on Jan 1, 2010, affected export of Vietnamese tra and basa catfish. Under the bill, Vietnamese tra and basa are named catfish, while under the Farm Bill 2002, the fish will be called pangasius.
6. Vietnamese government approved pangasius fish production and export plan by 2020, targeting to export 600,000 tons worth US$1.5B in 2010. The export revenues are expected to rise to US$2.2B in 2015 and US$3.0B in 2020.
7. Vietnam launched the program “Say No with impurities in shrimp” aiming to improve shrimp quality.
8. U.S.’s DOC reduced antidumping tax on Vietnamese frozen shrimp to nearly 0%.
9. Ben Tre’s clams became the first of its kind in ASEAN to receive MSC certificate.
10. Vietnam deployed EU’s IUU regulations which took effect on Jan 1, 2010.
