Vietnam Coffee Growers May Lose VND500B in 2009-2010 Crop: Official
Coffee growers in the central highlands region of Vietnam may lose around VND500 billion during the 2009-2010 crop because of decreasing yield and prices, the Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agroinfo) reported, citing chairman of the Vietnam Cocoa and Coffee Association (Vicofa).
Chairman of Vicofa Luong Xuan Tu forecast that coffee yield may fall 20%-30% in this crop due to pest outbreaks and unfavorable weather.
Tu calculated that it costs local farmers VND20,500 to produce a kilogram of coffee and the farmers only gain profit at price of VND25,000/kg. But the coffee has been selling fro only VND24,000-VND24,400/kg from the beginning of the crop.
Earlier, the Cultivation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecast that Vietnam’s coffee output may decrease 10%-15% to 17.5 million bags, or 1.05 million tons, in 2009-2010 crop. (Agroinfo)
