Vietnam Aviation Industry: New Runways to Take Off
The Vietnamese airborne transportation market is expected to speed up in 2010. Airlines in the country are forecast to serve approximately 20 million passengers and transport 420,000 tonnes of cargo in 2010, a year on year increase of 15 percent and 20 percent, respectively. Vietnamese airports are expected to serve 27.65 million customers and 530,000 tonnes of cargo and postal parcels, a respective rise of 15 percent and 23 percent compared with 2009.
In 2009, the Vietnamese air transport market was in two opposing tones on the domestic and international markets. The domestic market growth was stably at over 20 percent. The industry carried 17.5 million passengers in 2009, up 7.5 percent from 2008, and 350,000 tonnes of cargo, up 1.5 percent. On the contrary, most of international routes to and from Vietnam sank. A total of 8.9 million passengers and nearly 250,000 tonnes of cargo are transported, down 2.7 percent and 2 percent from the previous year, respectively.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), in the quarter of 2010, Vietnamese airports served 6,375,007 passengers, equal to 25.1 percent of the full-year plan and up 3.9 percent from the same period of last year. In April, airway passengers totalled 2,510,787 passengers, up 18.5 percent over the same month of last year.
Good international remarks on Vietnam’s economic resilience to the world crisis, GDP growth of 5.5 percent in 2009, stability of investment environment, tourism, political background and social order prove Vietnam is a safe destination for international visitors and an attractive place for business and investment activities. In addition to operating international airlines with stable mining activities, many new airlines also opened routes to Vietnam like Hainan Airlines (China), TransAsia Airways (Taiwan), K – mile Airlines (Thailand), Indonesia Air Asia and Cambodia Angkor Air. Besides, the Vietnam Airlines Corporation also launched some new international routes from Hanoi to Osaka and Fukuoka in Japan.
When the aviation market is reviving and growing up, the Vietnamese aviation industry has focused on increasing investments for new facilities, upgrading infrastructures and airports to international standards. Important ongoing projects include the passenger terminal T2 at the Noi Bai International Airport, the cargo terminal at Noi Bai International Airport, parking areas in Vinh Airport, international terminal at Danang International Airport, Phu Bai International Airport, Cam Ranh International Airport, passenger terminal at Can Tho Airport, control tower at Noi Bai International Airport and control tower Tan Son Nhat airport.
The 11th meeting of the ASEAN Air Transport Working Group held in March 2010 discussed specific action plans for the integration and liberalisation of ASEAN air transport in the 2005 – 2015 period and the formation of an unique airborne transport market in 2015. This is considered a great opportunity for the Vietnamese aviation industry and others in the region. With its comparative advantages resulted from stable economic growth and proper investments, the Vietnamese aviation industry will have more new runways to take off.
