Vietnam at the 17th position in ranking of telecom business environment indicator

Vietnam remains at the 17th position in the ranking of telecommunications business environment indicator.
This position is higher than that of Sri Lanka but lower neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Cambodia, according to the data from Market Research firm-BMI (UK) announced for Q2 this year.

The Vietnam’s low telecommunications business environment index was due to the decline of Average Revenue Per User (ARPU index). Vietnam’s ARPU has been declining gradually in past years with $5 per person per month in 2010, lower than the figure in 2009 ($5.52), $6 in 2008 and $6.5 in 2007.

BMI forecasted Vietnam’s ARPU may drop to $3.51 in 2015 with an assumption of unchanged competition situation.

In 2010, Vietnam had more than 155 million mobile phone subscribers and it is estimated to reach 184 million by the end of 2011. This suggests a high subscriber rate but a large number of dead subscribers. This situation was caused by the fierce competition in past years on a market with so many suppliers.

According to BMI, the market will be improved if implementing the solution of using common number repository, which enables users to keep their phone numbers when switching the network. – Vietbiz24
