Vietnam Aims to Become World Top Apparel Exporter This Year

Vietnam targets to become the world’s top textile and garment exporter in 2010 from last year’s 8th position. The apparel industry took the lead among Vietnam’s export items with a turnover of $9.1 billion in 2009, jumping 78 times against that of 1991.

The industry expects an on-year growth of 12% to $10.5 billion this year following the global economic rebound.

The U.S., the EU and Japan are the main importers of Vietnamese apparel, accounting for 55%, 20% and 10% of the country’s total export value of these products last year, respectively.

Vietnam’s apparel exporters need to transfer the business method from original equipment manufacturing (OEM) to original design manufacturing (ODM) in order to increase the added value of their products, experts emphasized.

The Vietnamese prime minister has decided to choose March 25 as the traditional day of Vietnam Textile and Garment Sector.
