Vietnam agro sector posts $3.7B trade surplus in Jan-August

The Vietnamese agricultural sector posted a trade surplus of nearly $3.7 billion in the first eight months of this year, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Exports of agriculture, forestry, and seafood products in August is estimated to reach $1.75 billion, bringing total export earnings for eight months to $12.2 billion, up 20.1% on-year.

Of the Jan-Aug figure, agriculture contributed $6.5 billion, up 16.6%, seafood $2.95 billon, up 12.9%, and forestry, $2.28 billion, up 35.8% against the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, the sector imported $8.5 billion worth of agricultural products and materials between Jan and Aug, up 28.9% on-year, with major imported products are fertilizer, animal food, materials to produce animal food, wood and wood products.

Vietnam is expected to bring its total agricultural export revenues to around $16 billion by the end-2010, up $700 million on-year. (VNA)
