Vietnam agro-forestry and seafood export estimated to reach VND1.6Bln in Jan

Vietnam is estimated to earn $1.6 billion from agro-forestry-seafood exports in the first month of this year,

Vietnam is estimated to earn $1.6 billion from agro-forestry-seafood exports in the first month of this year, up 13.3% on year, the state-run Vietnam News Agency reported on February 9,citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Agriculture sector contributed the biggest export value of $0.91 billion, up 19.3% from 2009.

The increase in export revenue of agro-forestry-seafood sharply resulted from the prices of these staples hike as the demand has increased sharply in the beginning of the year.

Rubber posted the second biggest export value of 70,000 tons worth $250 million, increasing 29% for quantity and 82.8% for value on year. Meanwhile, the world prices of rubber hit the record of $5,000/ton.

Rice export slightly increased to 380,000 tons worth $200 million.

The country also earned $98 million from exporting 15,000 tons of cashew nut while its pepper export also saw an on year increase of 40% to 7,000 tons.

Coffee posted a decrease in both export volume and value of 30% for quantity and 13.2% for value to 100,000 tons worth 175 million in January.

The MARD requested businesses to encourage trade promotion activities, expand into new markets, increase the quality of products, and check on food safety and hygiene.
