Vietnam 2009-10 Sugar Output Falls 3% to 889,450 Tons

Sugar refineries in Vietnam have completed the 2009-2010 crop with an a total output of 889,450 tons, down nearly 3% from the previous crop, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The refineries are holding 336,000 tons of sugar in stocks, up more than 35% from 220,000 tons a year earlier, the ministry said.

Earlier, the ministry forecast that Vietnam will lack up to 300,000 tons of sugar, despite a full-year import quota of 200,000 tons.

Currently, sugar is selling for between VND14,000 and VND18,000 a kilogram in Ho Chi Minh City, down VND200-VND400/kg from compared to several weeks earlier.

Local traders said the prices of domestically-made sugar are still some VND3,000-VND4,000/kg higher than Thais’, prompting consumers to shift to imported sugar.
