Three urban areas and 15 EZs projected for Phu Quoc Island
The government has lately issued the adjusted general construction plan of Phu Quoc Island up to 2030, in which the island will become the special economic-administration area, the country’s high-class ecotourism resort and entertainment centre, with orientation of an international financial centre in the region.
There will be three urban areas on the island namely Duong Dong, An Thoi and Cua Can, in which Duong Dong urban area will become the central financial, trading centre and community services of Phu Quoc tourism city.
Meanwhile, An Thoi urban area will be the international portal and technical centre, and a non-tariff area, offering freight forwarding and trading services. Cua Can urban area will specify in researching activities, a reservation area for the island’s forestry, agriculture and tourism industry.
The northern part of the island will become a natural reservation area with focus on developing ecotourism, traditional villages and high-tech agriculture, while the southern part will concentrate on ecotourism, portal urban areas, international airport, forest protection section, theme parks. Phu Quoc Island will develop ecotourism areas and traditional craft villages in the western part and agriculture and natural reservation areas in the east.
It is forecasted that up to 2020, the area for developing urban areas on the island may reach 2,400 hectares, urban population of 200,000-300,000 people and about 90,000 people living in rural areas.
There will be 15 ecotourism areas on Phu Quoc Island such as Bai Thom, Ganh Dau, Rach Tram, Rach Vem, Bai Dai, Vung Bau, Cua Can, Bai Ong Lang, Bai Vong, Vinh Dam, Bai Truong and other specific tourism sites.
In the general development plan for the island, there will be projects to be set at priority list such as Phu Quoc International Airport, An Thoi International Port, domestic ports of Duong Dong, Vinh Da and Bai Thom, and the north-south axis traffic road system.
