Telecom firms focusing on upgrading quality, holding existing customers

Number of new subscribers is decreasing but mobile service providers say more importance is to focus on upgrading quality and holding existing customers, the local newswire VnExpress reported.
Since the year early, the number of new subscribers of three networks namely VinaPhone, MobiFone and Viettel all have fallen sharply. Previously the number increased 130,000 new subscribers a day, which plunges 70% this time.

A senior leader of Viettel said: “We do not pay attention to number of newly activated subscribers a day. The question Viettel cares for its business department is how many current subscribers are and how much arising cost of each subscriber a day”.

Standards to count number of mobile subscribers of Vietnam also changed. Accordingly, Viettel’s system will record basic data including how many subscribers are using main account to give calls, messages, and other added value services, and how much monthly cost is, he noted.

“All calls made by promotional accounts are not taken into our statistic standards”, he shared.

In his opinion, during the past years, the telecommunication market is developing, so the race between networks aims to attract customers. Currently, the market share pie in this field has been divided and developing new subscribers becomes a secondary target.

Previously, a number of subscribers was seen as one of basic standard to assess size of a mobile network. Therefore, today VinaPhone may announce to have 10 million subscribers and tomorrow MobiFone may raise the number to 12 million, Viettel with up to 15 million.

However, at this moment, the market has touched the saturation threshold, even small firms such as Vietnamobile or Beeline also do not pay attention to how many new subscribers. Instead of this, they care how much customers bring to their revenues.

The expected competition among telecom firms is concerned with quality, coverage and after-sales services. Promotional policies will also be provided to certain groups of customers such as family subscribers, corporate, worker and farmer subscribers. Accordingly, the customers in these groups [internal calls are preferred] will enjoy minimum promotion call cost of 10% and maximum at 75%. – Vietbiz24
