Strengthening Software Copyright Audit in SMEs

Inspectors from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in cooperation with the Police Department of High-Tech Crime, on May 30 and June 1 were on mission overseeing compliance with laws governing computer software copyright protection as a part of a Government’s pathway to reduce software piracy and to propel further development of the local information technology industry.

It is also a public demonstration of the Government’s resolve in up-scaling software copyright audits in small and medium-sized companies (SMEs), which has long been considered a sector with very high piracy.

One company in Binh Duong province and one in Ho Chi Minh City were detected using piracy software. The software in question is mostly popular programs, including: Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 7; Microsoft Office 2003; Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007; Windows Server 2003; Lac Viet 2002 Dictionary and other more specialized software such as AutoCAD and Adobe Photoshop.

The widespread piracy among SMEs, individual users and Internet outlets is among the causes for the piracy rate of 85% in 2009, unchanged from the previous years of 2008 and 2007, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
