Second trial of Vietnam’s shrimp lawsuit concludes
The second trial of Vietnam’s lawsuit against the US for imposing anti-dumping duties on frozen shrimp imported from Vietnam was concluded on December 15.
Over two working days at the headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the two sides continued to provide evidence defending their legitimate interests.
Vietnam protested the US practice of “zeroing” to determine dumping margins, which have been often used by Washington regularly in many anti-dumping lawsuits. Zeroing calculation has increased anti-dumping tariffs, causing losses to Vietnam’s shrimp exporters. Vietnam also emphasized that the national treatment principle which the US had applied during the process ran counter to the anti-dumping agreement and a protocol on Vietnam’s admission to the World Trade Organisation.
Ms Tran Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Head of the Vietnamese mission to the United Nations, the WTO and other international organizations in Geneva said that the panel will give a report with detailed conclusions on the case in April 2011. In January and February, the panel will deliver reports on the lawsuit and send them to both sides.
