Seafood exports to gain its goal

The Vietnamese agricultural sector is expecting to record US$4.815 billion in exports, a year-on-year increase of 14 percent, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

From early this year until September, Vietnam exported over 969,200 tonnes of seafood products worth US$3.5 billion, an increase of 10.9 percent in quantity and 15.4 percent in value compared to the same period last year.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said, despite meeting consecutive difficulties, Vietnam’s agricultural sector has gradually affirmed its position and conquered many markets around the world. In particular, Vietnam’s biggest seafood market is Japan with 18.4 percent, followed by the US with 17.9 percent.

The EU is also still a big market for Vietnam. In the first nine months of 2010, the EU imported more than 259,800 tonnes of seafood products from Vietnam, valued over US$826.7 million, an increase of 6.3 percent compared to the previous year.

In the same period, shrimp continued to be the leader in Vietnam’s seafood exports (up 22.1 percent against 2009). Tra fish exports ranked second and were up 6.4 percent against last year.

Apart from traditional markets, Vietnamese agriculture is now penetrating America and the Middle East. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) forecast, the demand for seafood products in Asia and Europe will increase sharply in the future. – VOV
