Salamander Energy PLC plans to start drilling for oil and gas offshore northern Vietnam in July 2011, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said over the weekend.

Salamander Energy PLC plans to start drilling for oil and gas offshore northern Vietnam in July 2011, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said over the weekend.

The company will drill at Block 101-100/04 off the coast of Haiphong City, 100 kilometers east of Hanoi, the ministry said in a statement.

The city’s chairman, Nguyen Van Thanh, has asked the company to finalize the necessary procedures for the city to approve the plan, the ministry said.

U.K.-based Salamander Energy has been operating in Vietnam since 2007. The company now has 22 projects in Southeast Asia, including three in Vietnam, the ministry added.-Dow Jones
