Private carriers likely to take off in Q4
Vietjet Aviation Joint-Stock Co (Vietjet Air) and Mekong Aviation Joint-Stock Co (Mekong Air) are likely to commence their domestic services in the fourth quarter if these private airlines meet requirements, including the air operator certificate (AOC).
Vo Huy Cuong, director of Air Transport Department at the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), said Mekong Air had worked with the aviation authority over the procedures for obtaining the certificate that guarantees the carrier to take off in October or later as planned. Vietjet Air has a greater chance to launch service in the fourth quarter than Mekong Air as the first licensed private carrier is halfway through the process of obtaining the AOC, which requires an airline to fly 24 months after it is licensed.
Meanwhile, CAAV has urged Jetstar Pacific to submit its own logo by September 15 as one of the conditions for the Ministry of Transport to consider granting a new license to the low-cost carrier. Presenting a new logo is the next step required for Jetstar Pacific after the aviation authority told the airline to remove the logo of Jetstar Airways from airports, as it may make customers mistake the local carrier for Ietstar Airways.
Jetstar Pacific is a partnership between Vietnam’s Pacific Airlines and Jetstar Airways under Australia’s Qantas Group, which has acquired a 27 percent stake in the airline and plans to increase its ownership to 30 percent worth $50 million.
