Pomina Steel: Vietnamese Trademark, International Quality
Pomina, a prestigiously high-quality steel brand, is the first steelmaker in southern Vietnam to obtain two quality and environment certificates, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Set up in 1999 with an initial investment capital of VND1,100 billion, Pomina Steel started building a steel mill powered by the world’s most modern technologies from Italy and Germany. Pomina-trademarked steel has symbolised the premium quality and the absolute prestige and trust of customers. Apart from the head office in Ho Chi Minh City, Pomina Steel also has branches in Da Nang, Nha Trang, Can Tho and other localities. At present, Pomina supplies more than 1.1 million tonnes of construction steel each year, of which 92 % is for domestic consumption and 8 %, or an equivalent of US$28 million, is for export. According to its business development strategy, Pomina Steel will scale up the ratio of export to 30 % of the total sales.
The company’s leadership picked up steel production lines powered with updated technologies of Siemens Vai and Tenova SpA of Italy. From these technological lines, the company is capable of manufacturing high-quality steel products such as rolled steel, round steel bars and especially deformed steel bars. Besides these strategic products, the company also diversifies its products categories with shaped steel such as angle steel, strip steel, U-shape steel, I-shape steel and V-shape steel, etc. All products of the company always meet common standards such as the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Vietnam’s ASTM standard and the British Standards.
With its premium quality, reasonable price policy and considerate customer care service, business activities of Pomina Steel have been expanded year after year. Apart from domestic sales, Pomina also exports its products to Cambodia. The quality of Pomina steel products has conquered the Cambodian market. The export volume to this market doubled and tripled annually. In 2006, export revenue to Cambodia reached US$20 million. At present, Pomina steel has occupied a major market share there.
And, with its improving product quality, the demand for its products has surged. To penetrate new export markets and expand the domestic market share, the company has invested in new production facilities. Pomina decided to build the Pomina III steel mill with an annualised ingot output of 1 million tonnes and laminated steel production of 500,000 tonnes at Phu My Industrial Park, Tan Thanh district, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. This US$300 million steel mill is the largest in Vietnam and is equipped with the latest technologies in the world such as Consteel-Techint for ingot production. This advanced technology uses discharged heat to dry scraps, helping reduce production costs thanks to less material consumption and limit emissions into the environment. This is the 20th steel mill in the world to use the advanced Consteel-Techint technology of Italy.
Meanwhile, the steel laminating plant is powered by German advanced technology.
Together with current steel ingot projects in Vietnam, domestic suppliers can satisfy the demand by steelmakers in the country. In the near future, Vietnam can export steel billets to other countries in the region and the world.
Apart from paying taxes to the State, Pomina is also an example in carrying out charity and social development activities. The company has funded the construction of hundreds of houses for the poor. Pomina is also a symbol of the “For the poor†campaign, giving a helping hand to the poor and assisting the disadvantaged people to realise their dreams through the “Dreams story†programme. Then, the company always is sustained by the support from the society and customers to continue its rising development.
