PM Dung orders stronger focus on port development

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has ordered relevant ministries and agencies to focus on developing three deep-water seaports in Hai Phong City and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province within the next five years.

The seaports, which are located in Lach Huyen in the northern city of Hai Phong, Cai Mep and Ben Dinh in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, will become seaports on a regional and international scale.

He has also said that investment must be sought for the development of seaports and other infrastructure such as transport infrastructure connecting to seaports, cargo distribution centres and logistic services.

Under the order, the Ministry of Transport must soon complete the approval of a detailed zoning plan of seaports as well as organise and monitor the implementation of the plan in order to meet the country’s demand for sea transport and attract cargo transit through Viet Nam.

The ministry has the responsibility to order relevant agencies to focus on investing in container and general cargo wharves in Cai Mep, Cai Mep Ha, Ben Dinh–Sao Mai at Vung Tai seaport, an international gate in the south.

The ministry in co-operation with the HCM City People’s Committee, the Dong Nai Province People’s Committee, and relevant ministries and agencies will conduct research to develop a seaport on the right bank of the Thi Vai – Cai Mep River. — VNS
