PetroVietnam, Petrolimex, BIDV, Viettel Finance VND180B for ASEAN 2010
Four institutions in Vietnam have signed deals to finance a combined VND180 billion (US$9.74 million) for the country’s Year of ASEAN Presidency 2010 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem.
Under the deals signed in Hanoi on Jan. 22, the state-owned Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) and the Military Telecom Corp. (Viettel) will fund VND50 billion each while the state-owned Vietnam National Petroleum Corp (Petrolimex) will contribute VND30 billion.
Meanwhile, some other donors have pledged to give funding by materials, the government of Vietnam said on its website last Friday.
Vietnam, which assumed the ASEAN Presidency 2010 since Jan 1, will start its Year of ASEAN Presidency 2010 with the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Meeting on ASEAN Politics-Security Community and the ASEAN Steering Council Meeting slated for Jan 13-14 in the central coastal city of Danang.
The country will host many important events and activities, including the 16th ASEAN Summit Hanoi in Apr, the 17th ASEAN Summit and related Summits in Hanoi in Oct.
Vietnam, as the bloc’s presidency, will make efforts to foster the cooperation among member nations as well as between the ASEAN and its partners in order to deal with global challenges such economic crisis, food and energy security, climate change, natural disasters and epidemics.
As the new chairmanship, Vietnam has set a series of priorities and agendas for member nations, the ASEAN Secretariat, the bloc’s dialogue partners and other external parties.
The Southeast Asian nation is expected to include the East Sea, or the South China Sea issues on agendas during its presidency term as the territorial waters-involved issue is causing tensions among regional countries over the past year. (chinhphu.vn, vovnews.vn)
